Celia Cruz Quarter
|
The Celia Cruz Quarter, the 14th coin in the American Women Quarters™ Program, honors the legendary Cuban-American singer and cultural icon. Celia Cruz is the first Afro-Latina to be featured on U.S. currency. A beloved figure in Miami's Cuban community, Cruz actively participated in local festivals, events, and initiatives that celebrated cultural pride and championed human rights for Cuba. In her honor, Miami’s famous Calle Ocho was co-named "Celia Cruz Way." She was further recognized with a star on the city’s Walk of Fame. The City of Miami Beach also paid tribute by officially co-designating a portion of Meridian Avenue as "Celia Cruz Way/Harvey Milk Way. ” Did you know that Celia’s iconic catchphrase, "¡Azúcar!" ("Sugar!) was born in 1964 at a Cuban restaurant in Miami? It is a playful nod to her Cuban roots that evolved into a powerful symbol of joy, resilience, and cultural pride. Her legacy continues to thrive in Miami and beyond, now immortalized in this historic coin.
