WHAT'S HAPPENING

Message From the President & CEO

Each week, our Research & Business Insights Team provides me a summary of local destination performance using, among others, one key barometer – STR hotel data reported by our local hotels. I’m especially pleased with two key points on weekly hotel demand (actual hotel rooms sold) and hotel occupancy percentages – which remains on the rise and in fact, is now “only” 5.3% behind where our hotel numbers were at the same point in time in 2019. This of course translates to we’re 95% back to prior levels in terms of hotel guest volumes. (And this without so many of our international visitors, though we have positive success stories here, as well.)

Hotel occupancy also continues to trend upward and again, using a comparable point in 2019, it’s now pacing 11.8% behind where our hotels were in 2019. (I do want to note that we have 5.5% more inventory now with 22 new hotels online in 2021.)

There’s much more data supporting our destination’s recovery – including significant increases in air arrivals and average daily rate – and I encourage you to check our Research & Statistics  reporting page for frequent updates.

So much to be thankful for as we prepare for the holiday and Miami’s Art Season begins. Read on to learn more and enjoy a blessed Thanksgiving with all you hold dear.

David Whitaker

Miami’s Art Season Begins

As Greater Miami and Miami Beach welcome back international visitors, Art Basel makes its long-awaited return December 2 - 4, when art lovers from around the world gather at the Miami Beach Convention Center to explore more than 250 galleries from over 35 different countries through a series of gallery walk-throughs, online presentations and virtual events. The excitement of Art Basel spreads throughout the city with a series of satellite fairs, lavish parties and Miami Art Week celebrations.

Of special note (and throughout the year) is the GMCVB’s Art of Black Miami (AOBM), celebrating art, culture and diversity. Exhibitions and events offer a unique appeal and cultural aesthetic, and include significant works from Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America and around the globe celebrating the Black diaspora. This year-round initiative highlights the artistic and cultural landscape found in heritage neighborhoods and communities throughout Greater Miami and Miami Beach.
