Visit Florida Receives EDA Grant for Tourism Recovery
 
Visit Florida has been awarded a $5 million CARES Act Recovery Assistance grant by the Economic Development Administration (EDA) to help support the recovery of Florida’s tourism economy from the COVID-19 pandemic. All of this funding will be used to assist DMO partners across the state.
 
 
 
 
MIA Served Over 1.1 Million Travelers During Winter Holiday Period
 
Miami International Airport served more than 1.1 million passengers during the 17-day winter holiday travel period from December 21, through January 6. On January 3, MIA welcomed nearly 90,000 travelers, making it the busiest travel day the airport has seen since the pandemic began. The upward trend toward pre-pandemic levels at MIA is expected to continue, thanks to several airlines launching Miami service and existing carriers expanding service.  
 
 
 
 
Deering Estate Offering New Bay Cruises
 
The Deering Estate is now offering a journey through Biscayne Bay on a new Birds of Biscayne Boat Cruise. This guided Boca Chita Key Cruise, Lighthouses of Biscayne Bay Cruise, or Stiltsville Historic Boat Tour will be taking place throughout the year departing from the Deering Estate. The two to four-hour tours give guests the opportunity to learn and explore Miami’s scenic water ways and history.  Visitors must practice social distancing, wear face coverings (ages 2 and up), and are not allowed to gather in groups larger than 10 people. Miami Beach Vacant Stores Unlock Opportunities for Artists
 
Seventy-one artists have been selected to display their works in the inaugural installment of “Miami Beach Open House,” an innovative program that fills empty Miami Beach storefronts while exposing artists to a wider audience of potential buyers. Miami Beach Open House will launch in late January. The artists were selected from a pool of 323 applicants based on the quality of previously completed projects, artistic accomplishments, cultural impact, project diversity and the completeness of their application package. MIA is the First Florida Airport to Join the Fight Against Human Trafficking
 
On January 11 at 10:00 a.m. in the MIA, TSA Checkpoint 4 entrance, the Miami-Dade County and federal officials will hold a press conference to announce MIA being the first airport in Florida to join the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Blue Lightning Initiative, designed to raise awareness against human trafficking by training and educating frontline airport workers. The online training will be mandatory for all newly hired Miami-Dade Aviation Department (MDAD) employees and will also be available to all 1,400 MDAD employees. Miami-Dade Tech Leaders Present Shared Vision
 
Tech leaders, builders, and advocates that have contributed to the foundation of Miami-Dade’s growing tech and innovation ecosystem collaborated on a #MiamiTechManifesto. Working together for more than a decade to actively lay the groundwork for an equitable, inclusive community, the increased interest in and conversations about the business opportunities Miami presents led some of these leaders to outline a shared vision. These are a shared set of principles for how to continue to build a tech ecosystem that is inclusive and unifying. Hard Rock Stadium Becomes First State-Supported Vaccination and Testing Site
 
The Hard Rock Stadium has opened as the first state operated COVID-19 drive-thru vaccination site. The Miami Hard Rock site began administering the first doses of the vaccine. The site will continue to provide COVID-19 testing while offering COVID-19 vaccinations to all individuals 65 years of age and older, as well as frontline health care workers. The site will offer 1,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine per day free of charge. Click here for more information.
 
 
 
 
Eastern Airlines Puts Asunción on MIA’s Map
 
Eastern Airlines began two weekly nonstop passenger flights between Miami International Airport and Asuncion, Paraguay. All flights will utilize Airbus B767-300 aircraft that seat 226 passengers. This new route will increase bilateral trade. Commissioner Souto, Director Sola and Director Kuryla are also working on a Sister Airport agreement with Asunción International Airport and a Sister Seaport agreement with the Port of Asunción that were both approved by the Board of County Commissioners. 
 
 
 
 
Date Night Series Continues at Fairchild Garden 
 
The Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden will begin the new year with a Beatles Rock and Roll Sing-Along on January 15 at 7:30 p.m. Local live favorites, The Super Fuzz with Vic Kingsley, will be performing the beloved songs of the Beatles. Guests are welcome to enjoy a nighttime stroll through the Garden at 7:30 p.m. before the show at 8:30 p.m.  Bring a blanket or your favorite chairs and there will also be food and beverage options for purchase at the Glasshouse Café. National YoungArts Week+ Offers Winners Artistic Development Opportunities
 
The National YoungArts Week+ will be offering the award winners at the finalist level the guidance needed to prepare for the next stage of their artistic growth. The 2021 intensive program will take place virtually this year with finalists across 10 disciplines participating in online classes and workshops with internationally recognized leaders in their field. Their work is adjudicated for financial awards of up to $10,000, and finalists are also eligible for a nomination as U.S. Presidential Scholars in the Arts. Audiences are invited to join January 25 at 8:00 p.m. to meet the most accomplished young artists across the country through six nights of free virtual performances. FPL Offers Small Businesses Main Street Recovery Credit Program
 
Florida Power & Light Company is accepting applications for its new Main Street Recovery Credit Program, offering credits to qualifying small businesses that have been impacted by Covid-19. FPL’s program is the latest of several initiatives, the total of which are valued at more than $75 million, that the company implemented to show its steadfast support of adversely impacted customers during the global pandemic.  Qualifying small businesses would receive a monthly 10% credit based on the previous month’s energy charge portion of their electric bill for the duration of the program. GMCVB Convention Sales To Host Informa Markets FAM
 
GMCVB Convention Sales will welcome team members from Informa Markets for a re-orientation of Greater Miami, our newly re-imagined Miami Beach Convention Center, a meet-and-greet with our hotel partners and will highlight the GMCVB’s Miamiland Campaign with a tour to the Everglades.  Informa represents and produces a wide range of shows and convention bookings such as the Miami Yacht Show, Seatrade Cruise Global, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and FIME International Medical Exposition, Inc. GMCVB Communications Team hosted Chadd Scott, who visited Miami January 7-10 to do research for a destination feature for Forbes online, focusing on Miami’s art scene.  His itinerary featured visits to destinations participating in the GMCVB’s Arts, Culture & Heritage program.  Coverage will include hotel accommodations, restaurants, museums, art neighborhoods and activities. GMCVB Tourism Industry Sales Sells Miami with Frontier Airlines
 
GMCVB Tourism Industry Sales will be participating in Frontier Airlines Warm Weather Cities Promotion running January 11 – 15. Greater Miami will be one of five warm destinations that will be promoted by Frontier Airlines during this period. The campaign goal is to create destination/brand awareness, inspiration to travel and health & wellness at the destination. 
 
 
 
 
GMCVB Communications Hosts Freelancer Contributing to Travelocity, Popsugar and Forbes
 
GMCVB Communications Team hosted Kristi Dosh, who visited Miami January 7-10 to research on Miami’s art scene.  Her itinerary featured partners participating in the GMCVB’s Arts, Culture & Heritage program.  The journalist regularly contributes to Forbes (UVM: 33,734,080), Popsugar (UVM: 3,913,713) and Travelocity (UVM: 1,777,772), and as a result of this visit, plans to produce one to two articles, covering accommodation, restaurants and activities.
