GMCVB Spotlights Dr. Larry Rice, President Johnson & Wales University, North Miami Campus, as a ‘Miamian Who Shines’ 
 

The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) recognizes Dr. Larry Rice, President Johnson & Wales University, North Miami Campus.Under the leadership of Dr. Rice, Johnson & Wales University created a virtual discussion series via Zoom entitled Crucial Conversations in response to the emotional turmoil the country is currently experiencing. These conversations took shape as dynamic, interactive exercises whereby students, staff, faculty, and community came together to acknowledge what’s going on and find ways that they could support each other and be part of the solution.  Crucial Conversation topics included; racial equity, social justice, civic responsibility, voting, criminal justice, policing reform, education, public health and the unique needs of the LGBTQIA+ community.  Additionally, the university’s culinary team provided relief by donating food to the North Miami community, the university provided campus housing and meals for displaced students unable to travel due to COVID travel restrictions and financial support and transportation for students experiencing hardship. “We have taken the safety and wellbeing of our campus community very seriously and have enhanced our safety protocols to maximize the welfare of our community” said Dr. Rice. 

Congratulations to Dr. Rice for being a shining example of Miami’s best in the community!

GMCVB President & CEO is Guest Speaker at MDGLCC Networking & Engaging Session
 
William D. Talbert, III, CDME will be the guest speaker at the Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (MDGLCC) virtual panel addressing the topic of Tourism on October 29 at 3:00 p.m.  In addition to remarks from Mr. Talbert, there will be a panel discussion with other leaders from the tourism sector.  Steve Adkins, President & CEO of the MDGLCC, will serve as the moderator. FIU Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management Conducts Study Assessing Impacts of Covid on Hospitality Industry
 
FIU’s Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management recently conducted a study revealing that Miami-Dade County hotel and restaurants – the two largest hospitality industries in South Florida – have taken a $3.36 billion hit from COVID-19. The FIU study says consumer confidence and government policy and support are critical to the industry's future. Findings were made by looking at tax revenue data from the county, as well as hotel room revenue data provided by the GMCVB and other data sources. Open House: Artist and Cultural Residencies on Miami Beach
 

The City of Miami Beach is investing in the revitalization of Miami Beach commercial corridors with an experiential cultural artist residency program. Miami Beach Open House will activate empty spaces in Miami Beach commercial districts by attracting, retaining and supporting the revitalization of the community.  Privately owned vacant spaces will serve as free workspaces, studios, exhibition space and communal areas that encourage dialogue and collaboration.

Artists and cultural organizations may submit applications of interest through November 13 by

Haulover Beach Skate Park Mural Reminds Kids to Stay Safe
 
To provide children with safe and healthy outdoor sports activities, Miami-Dade County Parks teamed up with  University of Miami Health System’s KiDZ Neuroscience Center to help educate skateboarders on the critical need to wear a helmet and protective gear. Haulover Beach Park Skate Park and Pump Track recently unveiled a mural created by local urban artist Rey Jaffet, embedded with safety tips and reminders to skateboarders to wear a helmet. Miami Beach Introduces Restaurant Reimbursement Program
 
The City of Miami Beach developed the Miami Beach Restaurant Reimbursement Grant Program to assist in the financial burden of delivery service fees. The City Commission allocated $60,000 and will launch the program on November 1. It will be a first-come, first-qualified, first-served grant program to distribute funds to eligible restaurants located within the city of Miami Beach with grants of up to $1,000 per restaurant.  Click here for more information.

Director of Sales, Christine Judson, will discuss Miami’s evolution over the past ten years with a thriving culinary scene, world-renowned architecture and leading cultural institutions and how it played a pivotal role in the highly anticipated hotel makeover. PAMM to Reopen to the Public with Restrictions
 
After months of planning, Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) is reopening to the public on November 7. A member's preview will take place earlier that week, November 5–6. All first responders and healthcare professionals are welcome during the member’s preview.  To follow social distancing guidelines and manage gallery capacity, members and visitors must reserve timed tickets online ahead of your visit. The Heritage Project: The Afro-Latinx Music Experience
 
The Adrienne Arsht Center is holding a free, virtual six-part series uniting Black leaders, activists, artists, educators and business owners to discuss matters impacting the Black community. On October 28 at 5:30 p.m. the live conversation will capture the spirit of a Harlem Renaissance salon. The Afro-Latinx Music Experience will explore African influences on Latin music and cultures. Historic Virginia Key Beach Park (HVKBP) has launched a new multi-media interactive virtual app. As you stroll through the sands of the beach or from the comfort of your home, you can listen to the lively and colorful stories of this unique Once “Colored Only” Beach. T-Mobile Partners with Zoo Miami in Connecting Classrooms with Conservation
 
T-Mobile is partnering with Zoo Miami Foundation (ZMF) and Zoo Miami in Connecting Classrooms with Conservation, a series of enhanced virtual science lessons for more than 500 third graders in 25 local community classrooms. Classes will receive Zoocademy with Ron Magill episodes and lessons, and supplemental STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) focused virtual classroom visits. Zoocademy is an online science-based educational series with short educational videos featuring Ron Magill. Click here for more information.
