Virginia Key Beach Park Celebrates its 75th Year with Statewide Historical Recognition

There’s a beach in Miami that marks the history of segregation in America — and Black residents are fighting to preserve it. Virginia Key Beach Park was founded on August 1, 1945 as Miami’s only beach for Black residents and people of color. Due to resolutions passed in the Florida House and Senate in March, August 1st is now officially Historic Virginia Key Beach Park Day. In May 1945, seven Black people led a “wade-in” at the all-white Haulover Beach. The act of civil disobedience eventually yielded the establishment of Virginia Key as the “colored only” beach. The beach is not just symbolic for Miami but nationwide, as the wade-in and subsequent establishment of Virginia Key came about a decade before other major civil rights milestones. Given COVID-19 restrictions, the Virginia Key Beach Park Trust held an online celebration which included a virtual film exhibition as well as a cocktail reception on August 8. For more information on Virginia Key Beach Park, click here.

Miami Carnival Goes Virtual

For the first time in 35 years, the Miami Carnival will be hosted as a virtual experience from Thursday, October 8 to Sunday, October 11 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Celebrating Miami, music, pageantry, and above all Caribbean culture over this multi-day experience, the Miami Carnival is one of the most anticipated Caribbean Carnivals held annually. The Miami Broward Host Committee is making all the elements of Miami Carnival free to access. There will be performances by the 2019 Junior Calypso winner, 2019 Jr. Steelpan winner, a segment to take viewers through a story about Carnival and viewers will still enjoy the pageantry of the costumes and the sounds of the steel pan. The GMCVB has a long-standing partnership with the Miami Carnival and looks forward to participating virtually this year and in-person in 2021. For more information and to access the event, please visit MiamiCarnival.
