WHAT'S HAPPENING

Miami, FL - March 3, 2020 - The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) has learned of recent cancellations and postponements to group business in the Greater Miami area. We share in the deep concern about coronavirus and are working closely with health and government officials to relay the most accurate and timely information to Greater Miami’s travel and hospitality community.

Currently, there are no cases of COVID-19 in Miami-Dade County however two cases have been confirmed in the State of Florida prompting Governor Ron DeSantis to issue a public health emergency for the state. A public health emergency better equips the state with resources needed to handle COVID-19. The U.S. government has not suggested limiting domestic travel or imposing restrictions on international inbound travel beyond those currently in place. The Greater Miami area remains open for business, and we recommend events and conferences continue as normal while heeding the CDC’s guidance for healthy travel habits.

The GMCVB stands with VISIT FLORIDA, the U.S. Travel Association and the rest of the travel industry in supporting collective efforts to keep the risk of coronavirus spread in the U.S. to a minimum. This is the reason the GMCVB team is in communication with partners at The Greater Miami and The Beaches Hotel Association (GMBHA), Florida Department of Health (FDOH), The Centers for Disease and Control (CDC), the US Travel Association (US Travel) and local government to keep up to date on the latest of this evolving global issue.

The CDC has issued travel warnings against travel to China and is advising avoidance of Iran, Italy and South Korea. In addition, a level 2 “enhanced precaution” has been issued for Japan. Following is the current protocol for international arrivals from China:

  • Any foreign national who has been in China in the last 14 days may not enter the U.S.
  • American citizens and permanent residents who have been in China in the past 14 days will be allowed to enter the United States but will be redirected to one of 11 airports to undergo health screening. Miami International Airport is currently not one of the 11 airports in the country receiving U.S. residents who have been in China within 14 days of their arrival. Depending on their health and travel history, they will have some level of restrictions on their movements for 14 days from the time they departed China.
  • Miami International Airport (MIA) is currently not one of the 11 approved airports in the country receiving U.S. residents who have been in China within 14 days of their arrival.  Any passengers fitting the criteria scheduled to arrive in MIA will be rerouted to one of the approved airports.
  • Additionally, the U.S. State Department has advised U.S. citizens to “exercise increased caution” when considering travel TO South Korea or Japan; however, there are no additional protocols for travel FROM those countries.
  • With the situation evolving rapidly, we encourage the traveling public to follow any guidance offered by the CDC and local and state public health authorities.

The health and well-being of Miami-Dade County residents as well as leisure and business visitors is a top priority for the GMCVB. We will continue to monitor COVID-19 concerns and its impact on the travel industry for Greater Miami.
